125 family sailing?
Could anyone assist?

We live in Perth, and have 2 small children 6 & 7.

We sail keel boats on a regular basis without the kids, but want to start exposing our little ones to sailing, and are looking at a centre board sailboat that we can have adult(s) and a the little ones, so we can ease them slowly into sailing, without forcing them unto a kids sailing course.

Could anyone confirm as to if a 125 is the right type of sailboat for this, and whom we can contact in Perth to try one out.

We just looking for something that we can have fun on as a family, and get the kids into sailing

Re: 125 family sailing?
Hi Donald

Yes, the 125 is an excellent craft for you to introduce the kids into sailing. The boat is one of the few around suitable for carrying an Adult and a child. As your skills & strength improve you can add the trapeze and spinnaker. When you feel ready you can then join the many other Adult/Child crews in racing at club, State & National level.
You will find the relevant contacts for WA under the contacts tab on the 125 website. Otherwise you can pop down to East Fremantle Yacht Club on Saturdays or Nedlands YC & South Perth YC on Sundays for a chat.
Cheers
Andrew

Re: 125 family sailing?
At Shelley Sailing Club we use Herons for having parents introduce small children to sailing and then we have Mudlarks that the children sail independantly from the age of about 6 or 7. We have started sailing 125's to allow an option for teenagers to sail together or for parents to sail with children once they have outgrown the Heron and are ready for more of a challenge(depending on there size 10 to 12 years and up). I have just started getting my 8 year old out on the 125 after a couple of years on the Heron and his Mudlark and my 5 year old is just starting her turn on the Heron. You are welcome to visit us on Sundays from 9 am when the juniors do their sailing and training, or from 1 pm when the parents sail with their children. Our emphasis is strongly upon whole of family participation and fun as the measure of success. We are located on the foreshore at Riverton Drive opposite Watersby Crescent. You can call me on 0431 681 881 if you would like to know more. Cheers, Paul

Re: 125 family sailing?
if you're looking to take 4people out on the 125, wrong choice of boat.i once took out 2 small children and the boat was nearly sinking.
i would suggest a catameran, with a trampoline so the kids can sprawl about on and have plenty of space, then get a bit more serious on.

Re: 125 family sailing?
I am the QLD state president and I use my boat to take interested poeple sailing in 125. I have on occasion taken another full grown adult sailing (both of us weighing at least 85kg's) and his 10 year old son saliing (at the same time) and we had no problems getting the boat to move.

Best advice is to go down to your local club and have a look at the 125 and see if someone will take you for a sail.

Cheers
Grant
