Return to the Forum List 125 crew weight | Gday everyone.
I currently sail a pacer with a crew that's been sailing one year, was just wondering what the optimum crew weight is for a 125. I'm about 75kg and my crew 55kg, so she would be on the lighter side for trapezing im guessing? Is 55 heavy enough to be competitive in the fleet across all wind strengths?
Couple of other questions, how many builders make the foam sandwich hulls now? Finally, is there a decent market for second hand foam sandwhich boats, and are they still competitive against the brand spankers?
Cheers, Simon

| Re: 125 crew weight | Hello Simon
That weight is fine for skipper and crew. Ideal would be around 120-130kg but the 125 can cope pretty well with a lighter or heavier crew weight (100-150kg). But that crew weight that you mentioned is pretty much perfect. In the last nationals I sailed I had a 35kg crew (77kg skipper) and sailed comfortably at the top of the fleet in 20+ knots.
In terms of builders there are a couple builders around. But there are a lot of good second hand boats getting around. They are absolutely competitive against the brand spankers and about half the price. The boats really don't make that big a difference. The biggest difference maker is the sailors. The sails and rig are also more important.

| Re: 125 crew weight | i agree mostly with what luke said. ive sent you a pm about the different glass boats out there. As for builders making them, i believe the three current builders are: formula sailcraft making mark 2's (or mark 1's if anyone wants one)
rob mcquade getting the chinese to build boats out of the mad cow mould.
and i think david spencer is selling botterils out of south australia.

| Re: 125 crew weight | i am about 65 kgs, it seems to be a pretty good weight in general because my skipper barely ever has to lean out, unless it is very strong winds, (or i'm being lazy, haha) but in lighter winds i don't go out on the wire much, but its worth it in strong winds when you sit back and laugh at everybody else...i'd be convient to be able to gain and lose weight when needed, but obviously that doesn't happen....but yeh 55 kgs seems to be in the middle of going out on the trapeze but not struggling
