Re: Spinnaker chute???? | Hi Ben
I assume your talking about the moulding that goes between gunwhales just aft of the bowcover on some foam boats? (Or are you talking about an actual mouth to the chute?)
If so, you should be able to get them from Jim Scott at Formula Sailcraft, or make your own. There is a new MK2 Hull "Rage" sailing from Nedlands which you could take a look at to get an idea of what it looks like.
Sorry I can't help as I use bags, lighter, faster hoists and kinder on kites.
Cheers

Re: Spinnaker chute???? | Thanks for your help Andrew. It is the bit that sits in the cutout in the bow cap and the spinnaker chute is attached to the end of it. I have contacted Jim and hopefully they can make one.

Re: Spinnaker chute???? | Hi Ben
You can actually get away with not having that item on a spinaker chute. Suggest you take a look at some of the other boats around with chutes....the best method I ever used (in a ply boat with the chute cut into the bowcover) was with a roller placed in the underside of the bowcover where the spinaker runs across in hoists and drops, and a mylar sock that was nice and slippery and stayed open to reduce friction. With chutes friction is always your enemy and the moulded mouths used to create too much.
I also recall that the moulded mouths used to be a fitting you could purchase....ronstan perhaps, but havnt seen them for years.
What club are you at Ben, and I may be able to direct you to a good person to show you what I am going on about.
Cheers

Re: Spinnaker chute???? | Thanks Andrew. I am at EBYC and David Smallwood has been helping me with everything. I have one its just cracked around the edges and I am worried that it will rip the spinnaker. I will ask Mr Smallwood about the other setups.

Re: Spinnaker chute???? | Hi Ben
Check out Izzy's boat, Serial Thriller. Pretty sure he has a chute. Also Claire Smallwoods boat Boogie Nights is still down there I think. Check that out too. David will steer you in the right direction, but the basics for a chute is minimise friction and have as large a chute mouth as possible.

Re: Spinnaker chute???? | I have seen chutes where the mouth is the width of the gunwhales. Do you know where I would get one from?

Re: Spinnaker chute???? | Either make one from stainless steel etc or talk to Jim at Formula Sailcraft as he does the moulded ones.

Re: Spinnaker chute???? | Ben I have a GRP chute that would be ideal. It can easily be fixed into either a timber or GRP hull. I have pulled a spinnaker through one of these hundreds of times over the years with no trouble. Beats bags every time. Pics show chute mouth on left and mould on right.
The key to it all is a nicely rounded rear outer corner for the sailcloth to flow over, where it is bunched at the retreival line tie off.
This chute fits into the bow cover and enables a double pull in the kite (divides into a third of its length) and can have the cloth end of the chute (use shade cloth hand sewn)terminating at the port chainplate. This leaves the cockpit area clear for the crew to easily change sides when tacking. A restriction with chute and a single retrieval line pull is the "room divider" along side the centrecase.
The mould in SA is going to the dump and you can have the chute mould and the last moulding (in blue) if you pay the postage. Why is the mould being dumped? The significant pattern changes slid through in 1997 made the NEC approved GRP plug and mould redundant. Since then much evolution in shape has occurred with the 125 drifting away from the one design concept. The Constitutional "one shape" has been ignored and I have grown tired of the rule bending for improved performance.
To make spinnaker handling very easy with smaller crews, I also have developed a pole launcher that I make for 125's, 505 etc. This works well and you can contact me for further details on spinnaker setups.
