NSW State 125 Titles 2013

Four Sydney crews made the trip down to Canberra to contest the NSW 125 State titles on Lake Burley Griffin against four Canberra crews. The Titles were run as part of the annual ACT Dinghy regatta with short course races run over 2 days.

The Starting Line-up was:

Photron - John and Milly Caley
Give Way - Simon George and Emma
Strange Magic - Rebecca and Alistair George (Junior)
Chilled Out - Charlie Parry and Jame Seidl (Junior)
Zooming Zoe - Blake Molyneux and James Caffery (Junior)
Spice Girls - Allulah-Beth Collins and Orla Grey (Junior)
Another One - Reuben Brooks and Alex Searle (Junior)
TBA - Eamon and Bruce Grey (12YO skipper)

Saturday
Canberra turned on great sailing weather with the wind building from 10 Knots at the start of the first race to 25 Knots by the start of the the third race on Saturday. The strong breeze led to some capsizes and gear failures with several boats having to abandon races.

Race 1
In the fairly steady moderate breeze, Photron had to work hard to stay ahead of Zooming Zoe with Strange Magic leading home their Hornsby River rivals in Chilled out and Give way. The other three ACT boats either didn't start of didn't finish.

Race 2
Zooming Zoe snapped their rudder box (again) before the start and had to miss the race. For the remaining boats it was lake sailing at its best as the 125s powered up Lake Burley Griffin. Weight and experience helped Photron create an early lead but it didn't save them from going over on the shy reach back from the wing mark.  Half the fleet sailed past while they sorted it out and Strange Magic held on for the win ahead of Chilled Out, Photron, Give Way and Another One with Spice Girls sailing gamely on to finish the course. All power to the junior crews!

Race 3
With the wind solidly over 20 knots and gusting 25 knot gusts,  TBA's crew judged it a bit too strong to start in. The Race officials even considering cancelling the race. Meanwhile Zooming Zoe was still onshore looking for a replacement rudder. Chilled Out and Strange Magic started well again but the added weight and strong wind experience on Photron saw them wear down the opposition and draw ahead. Strange Magic took an extended swim from which they had to be assisted by the rescue boat. Give Way came home second ahead of the consistent Chilled Out crew with Spice Girls again impressing by sailing the whole course to finish fourth ahead of Another One who also sailed well to finish.

That was the end of day one and after we secured our boats in front of the club it was time for a sausage sizzle and a few repairs.

Sunday dawned similar to the way Saturday had with the same 8-10 Knot forecast.  Zooming Zoe had found a replacement rudder and Spice girls had reattached their tiller. However when they went to launch they discovered the bottom pintle was missing from the rudder box along with both bungs from the transom. A quick search turned up an old pintle which was quickly bent into shape and screwed into place. However, their trials weren't over as the tiller came off again before they got to the start.

Race 4
Started in light winds with Spice Girls still halfway to the start line, having returned to shore to reattach the uncommitted tiller with lots of gaffer tape.
The wind had turned so far that most of the fleet elected to start on port tack - in fact a starboard tack start might not have even been possible. It was a full fleet chasing the shifts up to the top mark. Photron went their own way out to starboard side, while the rest of the fleet went port up the side of the big island. At one stage Give Way seemed to be heading back towards the start. 2/3rds up the first work, it looked like local knowledge was paying off  with TBA in the lead and all the junior crews up with them while Photron found themselves second last.
On the way down the second leg which was a run, a stronger shift from behind brought the tail-enders down on the lead boats which were in a bit of a hole drifting towards the wing mark. Photron managed to get past and finish the race a minute ahead of Zooming Zoe who picked up second place again (from only 2 races finished). The Hornsby River junior crews on Chilled Out and Strange Magic had an extremely  close tussle down the final run with Strange Magic blanketing Chilled Out and passing them right on the line.

Race 5
Was raced in a lighter breeze. In the shifty conditions, Photron cemented their dominance with another win while Chilled out finished ahead of Zooming Zoe to get another second place finish.

Combined High School Regatta

Seven 125 are competing at the Combined High Schools regatta at Belmont 6 ft Skiff club on Lake Macquarie. This is a great effort by a group from Hornsby PCYC Sailing club and by 4 victorians who loaned their boats and Les Kemp and Jim Scott who brought them up. Most of te students don't sail 125 normally. There are 150 boats in the regatta including everything from access dinghys to yachts and nacras and almost everything in between. The boats are started in divisions and scored on yardstick.

Results for the 125s so far can be viewed on this spreadsheet

Results NSW State 125 Titles 2012/13

Seven boats entered the 2012/13 state titles - three from South Lake Macquarie, three from Hornsby River and one from Dobroyd aquatic club. Sunshine lived up to it's reputation with a fairly consistant east - south easterly forecast to rise throug the day. With Trevor Larance not competing, everyone was in with a chance of a top 3 finish.

Jordan Gates got Emily Summerell to crew on Night Flight just in time to enter. They had good boat speed at times, often appearing from nowhere to challenge the middle of the fleet but didn't threaten Purplexed for the junior champion. They did however win 1st place on Handicap.

Justin Bakker and Jacob Sheldon probably would have liked a bit more wind - as it rose through the afternoon, so did their placings winning them third on handicap.

Alicia Watt and Luke Alexander on Purplexed had great boat speed except when the boat was on it's side. They easily won every race that they didn't capsize in - but unfortunately for them that was just one race!  It was enough to get them the junior trophy however. Watch out if they sail together enough to get the staying-upright business sorted out!

Simon George and Joanna Parr on Give Way got 2nd in the last race which would have given them the edge on count back if tied on points with Photron, but they were a couple of point behind and had to settle for 4th overall.

John Caley and daughter Millie on Photron, (sporting a new stiffer but heavier mast) never looked like taking a race but flew the flag for timber hulls and managed  three third placings to finish third overall.

Chris Taylor with crew Blake Gates on Jynnantonnix came second in the first race and then won the second to be tied with Shenanigans at lunch. In the afternoon, they continued to sail well but couldn't get past Shenanigans again, (capsizing after getting bumped by Photron in the last race) and finished with an honourable second overall.

Doug Blackstock with daughter Emily crewing aboard Shenanigans showed consistent speed, winning three of the five races to take home first place overall. Well done Doug and Emily on their first State Titles win.

Thanks to all the sailors, support crews, race officials and SLMASC, and the NSW 125 Association committee for a good days sailing.

 125 Dinghy NSW Championship

run by Hornsby PCYC Sailing Club

Lookout Bay, Hawksbury River
Sat 18 April 2012

The state titles were held as a three race short course series hosted byHornsby PCYC Sailing Club at Lookout Bay (formerly Dead Horse Bay), Brooklyn, on the Hawkesbury River.  Seven boats rigged up on the morning - two from DAC and five from Hornsby PCYC Sailing Club, including ‘The Incredible Hull’ now sailed by Beth and Kristian Higgs and the young talent of Luke Alexander and Charlie Parry taking ‘Jens Gem’ for a spin. Photos can be view at the Hornsby PCYC sailing club picasa site at

https://picasaweb.google.com/113666146074109213787/18Feb12_125StateTitles_HornsbyPCYC_Brooklyn#

Race 1
A nice easterly breeze got up around lunch time and by the time we had sailed out to the starting line on the beautiful Hawkesbury we had plenty enough wind to avoid being swept over the starting line by the powerful outgoing tide. Trevor Larance and Adam Mariani in ‘Chilled Out’ quickly established a lead with Simon George and Joana Parr in ‘Give Way’ not far behind on the single triangle course. By the finish they were less than thirty seconds apart, then nearly a minute to Jack Whittle and crew  in ‘Jackpot’ who just pipped Justin Bakker and Michael Grimund in ‘Fast Forward’ for third place. ‘Jens Gem’ was only 30 seconds behind ‘Photron’ and ‘The Incredible Hull not far behind them.

Race 2
‘Chillout’ and ‘Giveway’ again took the lead on the windward leg and extended their lead over ‘Photron’ on the return leg of the sausage course. ‘Jackpot’ made a better job of running against the tide and pipped ‘Photron’ on the line to take third. The young gun rookies in ‘Jens Gem’ came in twenty seconds later ahead of ‘Fast Forward’. Meanwhile, the Higgs on  ‘Incredible Hull’ discovered the hard way that it is better to leave your centreboard down until after you get the spinnaker up!

Race 3
With a good start, the Caley crew in ‘Photron’ reached the top mark just behind ‘Chilled Out’ and stuck with them till the wing mark where a better gybe saw ‘Chilled Out’ pull away. With ‘Giveway ‘ breathing down their necks, the boys on ‘Photron’ fluffed the last spinnaker drop and saw their second place slip away on the last beat. ‘Fast Forward’ crossed not much after that.

Thanks all for coming and well done. Congratulations to Luke and Charlie for being right in there on debut racing in a 125. I’m sure you will be trouble for us next year. Welcome to Beth and Kristian in ‘the Incredible Hull’. We look forward to seeing you all at the Nationals. And lastly a big thanks to all our helpers and the crew at Hornsby PCYC Sailing Club for running the states for us again.

NSW State Titles 20010-11

125 Dinghy NSW Championship
Dobroyd Aquatic Club (DAC)

Rodd Point
Sat 9 April 2011

The state titles were held as a three race short course series hosted by DAC on Iron Cove, part of Sydney Harbour. Seven boats turned up on the day - three from DAC and four from Hornsby PCYC Sailing. Last year’s champion, Luke Johnston has moved to Queensland and is no longer racing in NSW.

Race 1
The series got off to a slow start as it looked as if several boats would not reach the line in time to get the gun. As the light breeeze swung around prior to the sea breeze settling in, a port end start saw John and Brougton Caley in Photron take the lead, which they held around the top mark. Despite their relatively heavy crew weight, Trevor Larance and Nathan Price in Chilledout sailed past Photron on the downwind leg, only to be beaten by a couple of seconds on the line. Ron and Jack Garner in the Incredible Hull came in third just ahead of Graham Brown in Giveway to make it 1,2,3 for DAC. Local knowledge counts for a lot in the light shifty stuff.

Race 2
By the time all the fleet had made it round the one lap course (over one hour), the wind had settled into a nice steady Northeasterly breeze. John and Bro in Photron stuffed the start and trailed the fleet up the bay. Trevor opened up a nice lead over Graham and held on to win comfortably in just over 30 minutes. The Garners in Incredible Hull got another third and Photron had to be content with 4th. Justin Bakker in fast forward sailed well with a replacement crew to come in 5th.

Race 3
On the short start line and with the wind picking up, 3 boats got called for being over the line. Incredible Hull, and a couple others headed round to restart. Chilledout made it to the top mark first followed by Photron and Giveway. by the bottom mark, Giveway had moved up to second.  That was the order at the finish with the incredible hull finishing just 4 seconds behind Photron. Simon George in Amigo sailed his best race to  finish 5th ahead of the Bakker boats.

The Sailing Season is in full swing, and with a number of new crews taking to the water, continued success of the class, in our club, is assured.
This season we have 4 new crews, graduates from the F11 class, Justin Bakker and Alex Reed, Morris Woolley and Rob O’Donnell, Lindsay Hodder and Alice McKaig, and Noah Freelander and Nic Cracknell.
Although some of last years crews have moved on, we will still have a fleet of approximately 11 boats competing each week. These crews will again comprise of husband / wife, father / son, all girl, all boy combinations, again highlighting the versatility of the class.
John Bakker expects to have his new boat on the water, very soon, and is just waiting for sails.
Early season form has seen Mark and Henry Whittle leading the pack, in Lime Lite, and taking out the first Club Championship heat.

The Hawkesbury Cup will be held, again this year, on Sunday October 29 and we are looking forward to welcoming boats from other clubs. The event this year is held on a Sunday to avoid any conflict with our other club racing.

One of our newer sailors, Mike Daniels, of Whiplash Smile fame, has had to delay his start to the season, due to an injury suffered while playing Over 35s soccer, requiring a knee reconstruction,. He expects to resume sailing in the New Year.

 Dobroyd Aquatic Club

Dobroyd Aquatic Club (DAC) is located on Rod Point and we sail on Iron Cove, and inner harbour of Sydney Harbour.

Sailing is held on Saturday afternoons from the beginning of September until Easter, with racing starting from 2pm or later on days when rowing events are scheduled. Visitors are most welcome to come and race or just go for a sail. 125s race in the Open class alongside Tasars and a few other classes. A very casual winter sailing series is run each year with races on the first Saturday of each winter month. For 2011 winter, the scheduled start time is 1.30pm. Once again all sailors are welcome.

Keep up to date with all the results and series by checking http://www.dobroydsailing.org .
